Assistant Shariah Manager as primary risk steward for technical adherence to the requirements of Shariah is expected to show strong oversight and management qualities by reviewing, organizing, supporting, and ensuring that all Islamic Finance transactions undertaken by CIB out of HSBC Group are as per CIB FIM and adhere to the Shariah Standards acceptable to the HBME Internal Shariah Supervision Committee and the HBME Shariah Risk Management Framework, supporting Head of Islamic Finance Control in discharging oversight and governance responsibilities over the Shariah Compliant Business. A key focus of the role is to ensure all the necessary controls relating to Islamic Finance transactions are robust and compliant and governance and regulatory requirements are being met.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assist Head of Islamic Finance Control in ensuring that products and financing transactions documentation assigned by managers are Shariah compliant and are in line with general or specific guidelines or approvals of the Internal Shariah Supervision Committee (ISSC).
• Ensure and assist Head of Islamic Finance Control in the implementation of Islamic banking regulations issued by Higher Shariah Authority and Central Bank UAE.
• Assist in ensuring implementation of agreed Shariah Review Process by all business units and coordinate for Shariah assurance conducted by the Shariah Committee and internal compliance staff.

• Assist in managing the relationship with Shariah scholars.
• Implement the Group compliance policy locally by containing compliance risk in liaison with the Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer, or Local Compliance Officer, ensuring adequate compliance resources and training, fostering a compliance culture, and optimizing relations with regulators.
• Assist Head of Islamic Finance Control in conducting Shariah research requested by ISSC and contribute to the development of products, processes, and policies in an advisory capacity.
• Assist Head of Islamic Finance Control in providing periodic and continuous learning and training in Shariah matters to key internal stakeholders, senior management, board members, including all relevant staff.
• Assist Head of Islamic Finance Control for Secretariat roles to the ISSC and the SCGC including finalizing agenda and preparing the minutes of the ISSC and SCGC meetings.
• Follow and demonstrate compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations, and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which involved, specifically Internal Controls and Compliance policy.
• Demonstrate awareness of the operational risk associated with the role and act in a manner that takes account of operational risk considerations.
• The role requires effective communication and close collaboration with stakeholders across functions, businesses, and the region, supported by a good understanding of risk strategy, operational risk concepts, and strong organizational skills.
• Clear communication of outcomes, commitment to continuous improvement, and conduct consistent with HSBCs values are essential parts of the role.

Experience & Qualifications:

• Graduation degree is required.
• UAE national bachelors degree in law, Shariah law, or Islamic Jurisprudence preferable from UAE national universities to the extent possible.
• Minimum 0-3 years experience of Internal Shariah Control functions; knowledge in AAOIFI Shariah Standards is an advantage.
• Proficiency in English and good spoken Arabic.
• Professional certification from AAOIFI or CIBAFI is an added advantage.
• Strong ownership and responsibility, effective teamwork, good interpersonal skills, a proactive attitude, and the ability to meet tight deadlines while working within a large and diverse team.
