Associate Director, Portfolio Valuations - Global Capability Center
Job Description
About Alvarez & Marsal
Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm with over 10,000 entrepreneurial, action and results-oriented professionals in over 40 countries. We take a hands-on approach to solving our clients problems and assisting them in reaching their potential. Our culture celebrates independent thinkers and doers who positively impact our clients and shape our industry. The collaborative environment and engaging work-guided by A&Ms core values of Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity - are why our people love working at A&M.
The Team
A&Ms Alternative Investment Services (AIS) practice works with some of the most sophisticated participants in private markets — private equity funds, hedge funds, private credit managers, business development companies, and financial institutions — on complex portfolio valuation assignments spanning the full breadth of illiquid and alternative investment structures. This role is based in A&Ms Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Gurugram and is directly integrated with the US-based AIS team. You will work on live client engagements as an active contributor to valuation execution, model review, and delivery management across multiple concurrent mandates — not in a peripheral support capacity
How You Will Contribute
- The work is substantive and varied. You will own and review valuation analyses across private equity, private credit, hedge fund, and BDC platforms — building and challenging models spanning DCF, market comparables, yield-based approaches for private debt, and derivative pricing for complex instruments.
- Beyond modelling, you will dig into portfolio company financials, capital structures, and transaction activity to stress-test valuation conclusions.
- Preparing and reviewing client-ready workpapers, technical memoranda, and presentations is a core part of the role — documentation discipline is non-negotiable.
- Working with US-based teams means being a reliable counterpart: flagging issues, pushing back on assumptions, and moving work forward independently.
- Mentoring junior team members — through formal review and day-to-day coaching — is equally expected.
- 11–14 years of relevant experience in valuation, portfolio valuation, transaction advisory, or a related financial services environment
- Solid command of core valuation methodologies and corporate finance concepts; comfortable with both the technical and the judgement calls
- Demonstrated experience building and reviewing financial models involving private and illiquid investments
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills — detail-oriented without losing sight of the bigger picture
- Proven ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously without letting quality slip
- Clear, concise communicator; able to translate complex conclusions for senior onshore counterparts
- Track record of reviewing work products and developing junior professionals
- Direct experience supporting alternative asset managers on portfolio valuation or fair value measurement engagements
- CFA, CA, CPA, or MBA (Finance); CFA charterholder or candidate preferred
- Technical ability gets you to the door. What makes someone effective here is ownership — treating a deliverable as yours until it leaves, not until youve done your part. Intellectual curiosity matters; the asset classes are complex and standards keep evolving. You will need to hold your own with senior stakeholders across time zones, and in an environment that is entrepreneurial by design, comfort with ambiguity separates strong performers from exceptional ones.
We recognize that our people are the driving force behind our success, which is why we prioritize an employee experience that fosters each persons unique professional and personal development. Our robust performance development process promotes continuous learning, rewards your contributions, and fosters a culture of meritocracy. With top-notch training and on-the-job learning opportunities, you can acquire new skills and advance your career. We prioritize your well-being, providing benefits and resources to support you on your personal journey. Our people consistently highlight the growth opportunities, our unique, entrepreneurial culture, and the fun we have together as their favorite aspects of working at A&M. The possibilities are endless for high-performing and passionate professionals.
