Function Description
The Amex GSM Sales and Use Tax (SUT) team is responsible for the timely review, assessment and reporting of taxes to the Amex Corporate Tax department for final reporting and payment to over 300 U.S. government jurisdictions each month. Amex assesses/reports ~1.5M in taxes (related to A/P purchases) each month as a result of reviewing ~1500 invoices/month.
Purpose of the Role:
This new position will be responsible for the review of monthly Sales & Use tax reporting of all Accounts Payable transactions to the Corporate Tax department. This includes but is not limited to the review of monthly tax data, reconciling of the various reports against exclusion items and manual adjustments and matching the data against pre- defined rules to identify over/under payments. This person must understand the end-to-end AP S&U Tax process for the US market to include invoice review, treatment of commodities, how to process manual tax adjustments, and reconciling the S&U tax liability accounts. This position requires a strong working knowledge of the Ariba, Oracle and Vertex systems. The resource must have a working knowledge of S&U tax requirements regarding regulatory tax filing with all US government jurisdictions. In addition, the resource will be responsible for posting tax adjustment entries in the Accounts Payable system. Job functions also include but are not limited to; assisting with various S&U tax audits by pulling reports and invoices for the Corp Tax department and governmental auditors, educate and train users/requestors about the S&U Tax requirements for numerous commodities, and act as a liaison with Amex business users or suppliers to get the information for validating the correctness of taxability of invoices. This person would also work closely with the Technology/Project teams to provide requirements, testing and other support for any necessary system changes or enhancements.
Responsibilities:

  • The timely review, assessment and reporting of taxes to the Amex Corporate Tax department for final reporting and payment to over 300 U.S. government jurisdictions each month. Amex assesses/reports ~1.5M in taxes (related to A/P purchases) each month.

  • Identify over/under payments by reviewing transactions against pre-defined rules and make necessary adjustments/preparing packages for refunds

  • The resource must have a strong working knowledge of Sales & Use tax requirements regarding regulatory tax filing with all US government jurisdictions, as they must educate and train their team, end users and requestors about the S&U Tax requirements and provide tax related assistance to any Amex business users and/or suppliers.

  • This team is responsible for the timely preparation and submission of the monthly sales & use tax dashboard and metrics to leadership including saves

  • This team calculates and publishes to the respective ROCs, the monthly taxes saved due to the afore mentioned manual adjustments.

  • This person must enforce controls related to the S&U Tax processes, to ensure accurate: (1) monthly reconciliation of our Tax Rate tables vs the published BNA rates, (2) monthly reconciliation of original and credit adjustment transactions, and (3) monthly reconciliation of the primary review tracker against our monthly tax extract report (used for the M/E tax filing).

  • This position is responsible for coordinating and providing to Corporate Tax department the data files, invoice copies, PO’s, Contracts, etc., for any government S&U tax audits. At a minimum we have ~10 tax audits/year. Most of our State audits can require the pulling of ~250-1k documents per audit. By GSM SUT team assisting with the document gathering for such audits, we have helped Amex realize a save on certain state audits of upwards of $250k/audit.

  • Update rules basis monthly observations to ensure up to date rule repository.

  • This person must have a strong working knowledge of the A/P systems (i.e., Vertex, Oracle and Ariba), as they would work closely with the Technology/Project teams to provide tax requirements, testing and other support for any necessary system issues, updates or enhancements.

  • Candidate must be well versed with tax reporting/tax payments & reconciliation functions related to S&U Balance Sheet accounts and preparation of reconciliations in line with reconciliation policy.

  • Strong working knowledge and experience of ERP applications including Ariba, Oracle (both sub-ledger and general ledger) and Vertex.

  • Excellent relationship management and the ability to work in a global environment with staff at all levels of the organization.

  • Excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and analytical skills.

  • Exceptional communication skills – verbal, written and through presentations. Ability to break down complex ideas into clear and actionable messages.

  • Highly motivated individual with an ability to drive results and work with ambiguity.

  • Ability to handle multiple deliverables with aggressive deadlines.

  • Exhibits capacity to “connect the dots” and grasp both big picture and small details.

  • Customer management/customer interface with experience and ability to proactively anticipate customer needs and identify their specific requirements.

  • Exposure in project management and systems deployment for related processes is preferred.

  • Should be flexible to work in shift environment.

  • Take responsibility and work with minimal supervision, as well as have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Past Experience

  • Graduate with at least 4-6 years of experience.

  • Candidate must have strong working knowledge of end-to-end AP workflow related to US Sales & Use tax and have worked for at least 2 years in Sales & Use tax processes.


Academic Background
  • Must have a B.com Graduate/MBA in finance or higher with minimum work experience of 2 - 3 years in Tax.

Functional Skills:
  • Must have a strong working knowledge in US Sales & Use tax, accounting, and audit

Knowledge of Platforms:
  • Oracle, Ariba and Vertex and strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of tools.
