What Youll Do
At the forefront of tax compliance and automation, Avalara simplifies the complexities of determining the taxability of goods and services across various jurisdictions.
Were on the lookout for skilled Machine Learning Engineers to join our team, with a focus on refining our tax code classification models. Predicting the right Avalara tax code is essential for precise tax calculations, and your role will be instrumental in enhancing the customer experience during the Go-Live process.
In this position, you will be tasked with building, deploying, and maintaining ML models that are the backbone of our tax code classification systems. This role requires a combination of technical expertise in Machine Learning and a thorough understanding of software development, with the goal of boosting classification accuracy.

• Develop and deploy Machine Learning models specifically tailored for Tax Code Classification, focusing on maximising accuracy and optimizing performance.
• Conduct in-depth analysis and feature engineering to improve model efficacy.
• Make informed data-driven decisions with data analytics to help steer experimental efforts.
• Follow best practices and established standards for the development and deployment of REST APIs, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
• Build on top of the foundational MLOps framework for efficient model deployment, dataset versioning, and managing the entire model lifecycle.
• Leverage best practices in software development, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) along with appropriate functional and unit testing in place.
• Write, review, and maintain high-quality code that meets industry standards, contributing to the projects technical excellence.
• Lead code review sessions, ensuring good code quality and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  

What Youll Need to be Successful

• Demonstrated prowess in machine learning, with a particular focus on classification algorithms and their application in real-world scenarios.
• Commitment to continuous learning and applying the latest technologies and methodologies in machine learning and software development.
• 
  Proficiency in developing and debugging software with a preference for Python, though familiarity with additional programming languages is highly valued and encouraged.
• Good problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse issues, identify and apply effective solutions.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams.
  

Desirable Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or a related science field.
• 3+ years of experience in software development within production environments, along with experience to building machine learning models.
• Familiarity with algorithms, and data structures.
• Good analytical, design and debugging skills.
• Experience with cloud computing platforms, preferably AWS, and familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools.
• Demonstrated ability to keep up with technological advancements and apply them in a fast-paced work environment.
