Job Description
The Product Design Technician - Level I supports product development activities by creating and maintaining high-quality CAD models, engineering drawings, and product specifications in alignment with Cummins engineering standards. As part of a formal apprenticeship or regional training program, this role works closely with experienced Product Design Technicians to develop technical expertise in mechanical design, CAD modeling, configuration management, and engineering documentation.
The role contributes to delivering Right First Time (RFT) and On-Time Delivery (OTD) objectives while supporting current and future product development programs across Cummins Emission Solutions and related product areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, modify, and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for components and assemblies using Creo or equivalent CAD tools.
- Support development of product specifications, engineering drawings, and bills of materials in accordance with Cummins standards.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to support manufacturability, inspection, and functional performance.
- Develop capability to ensure high-quality models and drawings through adherence to engineering standards, procedures, and CAD best practices.
- Support modeling of sheet metal, casting, welded assemblies, and other mechanical system components.
- Perform self-checks and quality reviews using CAD and drawing checklists prior to design release.
- Utilize CAD data management and PLM tools such as Windchill for configuration control, version management, and engineering change activities.
- Support product configuration and change management processes throughout the product lifecycle.
- Learn and apply company, industry, national, and international engineering standards.
- Process internal engineering work requests and collaborate with cross-functional teams as required.
- Assist in maintaining documentation accuracy and engineering data integrity.
- Participate in classroom training, apprenticeship activities, and on-the-job learning programs to build technical capability and progress toward certification.

- High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience in a relevant STEM field is required.
- Must meet the educational requirements to begin a formal apprenticeship or regional training program.
- Registration in a regionally certified apprenticeship learning or training program is required.
- Diploma or vocational training in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, CAD Design, or related technical fields is preferred.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Basic proficiency in CAD modeling and drawing tools such as Creo.
- Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and engineering drawing interpretation.
- Knowledge of GD&T principles and engineering standards.
- Familiarity with configuration management and CAD data management concepts.
- Ability to create and maintain engineering documentation and bills of materials.
- Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems, assemblies, and manufacturing processes.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools preferred.

- Exposure to Windchill PLM or similar data management systems.
- Understanding of emission system components such as aftertreatment systems, SCR, DPF, sensors, and brackets.
- Experience gained through coursework, internships, vocational training, or apprenticeship programs in CAD modeling or product design.
- Entry-level role with minimal or no prior work experience required.
- Prior exposure to CAD modeling, mechanical drafting, or engineering design through academic projects, internships, apprenticeships, or vocational training is preferred.
- Experience with Creo, Windchill PLM, or mechanical product development environments will be considered an advantage.
