SQL Data Engineer

About the role:
We are looking for a talented SQL Data Engineer to work within our Product teams, to deliver data, insights and models that help them solve Customer problems and continually validate product performance through Customer feedback. At the heart you will help teams measure and understand Customer feedback and use of products, and performance vs long term business objectives.

• You will have a strong technical background with experience in designing and delivering high quality, data solutions (dashboard, databases, pipelines and visualisations).
• Strong judgment and communication skills, experience design, and continuous focus on engineering and operational excellence are essential for the success in this role.
• You should be comfortable and skilled with challenging the status quo and relish the idea of solving hard problems through deep collaboration with Customers and cross functional teams.
• You will tackle interesting, novel situations every day and you’ll have the opportunity to partner with multiple product teams at Morningstar in order to deliver exceptional service to the Wealth Platform business.

Our Technology stack is primarily built on a Microsoft .Net stack, with an Angular front end, hosted on Azure and leverages elements of the Power Platform and BusApps. We have a polyglot of Raven Databases, Cosmos and SQL Server, and our wider teams also leverage AWS stack. Job responsibilities:

• Working in cross functional teams with engineering, product, and design colleagues to embed a data informed culture which helps drive innovation, prioritisation and quality solutions to Customer problems and needs.
• Strong SQL skills: extract, manipulate, transform and analyse large volumes of data with a high level of accuracy.
• Identify areas to develop self-serve data products and reporting, leveraging tools like Power BI.
• Identify and prioritize additional information needed to drive greater insights.
• Iteratively build and prototype dashboards to provide insights at scale, solving for analytical needs for journey.
• Understanding of end-to-end product and system analytics.
• Attending and contributing at all relevant team events and ceremonies.
• Technical ownership and responsibility to adhere to established guidelines through peer reviews for design and code, unit test results and deployment process for improving development team productivity.
• Enforce good Agile practices using JIRA including test-driven development and continuous integration.
• Be passionate about quality, process, programming, and investing in general, seeing opportunities for improvement, seizing them, and then sharing your findings with others.
• Experience scaling web-based software applications and services.
• Understand how to protect web applications from common security vulnerabilities.
• Be organized and able to remain productive even when you have multiple deliverables.

Get Hired
• Minimum bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent or evidence of strong self-taught data and analysis skills
• 5+ years of experience in Data Engineering using SQL / noSQL and experience with the best way to organise data and maintain it.
• Must have experience working on relational databases like Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Azure, MongoDB, or AWS DynamoDB.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic commercial product development environment and can write SQL code in the form of SQL queries, stored procedures, etc.
• Fast and Curious learner, with experience of defining engineering best practices and providing technical mentorship to other members of the engineering team, including but not limited to optimizing SQL queries, and performance of SQL data tables.
  

Nice to have:

• Experience with Amazon Web Services technologies will be a plus.
• Familiarity in code maintenance and usage via repositories like GIT will be a plus.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies like Scrum and Kanban and tools like JIRA will be a plus.
• Expertise in Web Analytics, BusApps, Power platform, Dynamics experience are desirable.
• Expertise of Raven Databases and Cosmos will be a plus.
• Familiarity of PowerBI will be a plus.
