Data Scientist-I/II

About the team:

Data Science is an integral part of Delhivery. Given the scale of our operations (nearly two million parcels delivered each day), it is imperative to use technology and algorithms in everything we do, and the data science team is at the centre of this.

The mandate for the team is to identify and solve high-impact business problems that can be tackled with the large amounts of data that we collect. This includes, but is not limited to, decisions on network optimisation, package routing, geocoding and pricing.

We expect each person in the team to take end-to-end ownership of an entire problem statement. This requires an ability to zoom in and out of the problem on demand, so that they can have conversations with business stakeholders on the one hand, and design and implement deeply technical solutions on the other.

Culturally, we are ambitious (in terms of the work we take on), experimental (always looking for new and improved ways of doing things) and work at a fast pace. The problems we take on are necessarily ambiguous and vague, and each member of the team is expected to take end-to-end responsibility, and make decisions independently.

About the role:

We are looking for “data science allrounders” for the position of data scientist. While we require candidates to have deep expertise in at least one area of modelling - Deep Learning (transformers, NLP, LLMs)/ OR +Simulations), we need them to have basic knowledge and appreciation of a larger variety of data science models.

In addition, we require all our data scientists to be very hands-on with data, and extracting insights from it.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

● Identifying and understanding problems across the business that can be solved using data and analytics

● Formulating and translating business problems in a way that can be solved using data

● Gathering and analyising necessary data and building the models

● Robustly analysing and testing models / heuristics, in a business-first manner

● Communicating results of models and analyses in a way that can be easily understood by business managers

● Working with operational and other teams to translate data insights into business outcomes

● Working with product and technology teams to implement insights and model outputs into our company’s core technology products

Required Qualifications

We are looking for people who are excited by data, and excited by business, and excited in bringing the two together to create high impact. We are a fast-paced team, and expect quick turnarounds. Most of the problems we work on are ambiguous, and handling ambiguous problem statements and expectations is a key part of the role.

Key requirements:

● Strong mathematics and logic skills

● Strong written, oral and visual communication skills

● Strong Programming skills in Python or Similar Programming Language

● Deep knowledge of either operations research or statistics or machine learning or natural language processing or simulations, and the ability to apply them to unstructured industry problems

● A passion for data and analytics

● Common sense and an appreciation of common logical fallacies

● Proven ability to deliver end-to-end solutions to industry problems

● 2 to 8 years of relevant industry experience

Bachelors/masters degree in a STEM subject from a top-tier institution (either in India or abroad)
