Job description –Business Analyst III



Digital Business Solutions & Operations Content Systems


Digital Business Solutions (DBS) partner with customers, authors, editors, and Elsevier colleagues, leveraging the power of technology and data to drive digital optimisation across Elsevier. As part for the DBS team, Operations Content Systems (OCS) deliver technology capabilities that maximise and transform content and data production across Elsevier’s article, journal and commissioned content portfolio. The OCS team support timely research availability for >2800 journal titles, including Lancet & Cell, and approx. 3800 books including Gray’s Anatomy. OCS people, processes and technology are a crucial underpin to annual revenue in-excess of $2.5 B US. Our services provide authors editors, customers, and employees, with the right primary research information, in the right format, at the right time.



The Role


The Business Analyst III role will work with business units, supporting several multiple initiatives driving modernisation, simplification, and consolidation of services across the portfolio. The role will focus on helping business partners hunt for value opportunities for author, customers, and employees, gathering and analysing work group data, defining current processes and requirements, researching best practices, and identifying and documenting process improvements and functional specifications.

Experience and Education


  • 3+ years of Business Analysis experience

  • Previous experience of working in an agile environment and using recognized development methodology e.g., Agile, Scrum and Kanban

  • Desirable - BS/BA degree in relevant discipline or equivalent experience

  • Required - ISEB-qualified Business Analyst preferred if in the UK, IIBA CBAP if in the US



Responsibilities


  • Partner with business and product teams Identify and document current business process, indicating challenges, problems, systems used, and context

  • Partner with business and product teams to gather business requirements and translation into high level user stories and acceptance criteria

  • With business and product teams to gather non-functional requirements

  • Work with technology teams to ensure solution with business need align, producing detailed user stories and acceptance criteria to support development and QA teams

  • Identify and document recommended process improvements based on research of best practices and analysis of work group data

  • Identify and document future business processes, with change areas clearly defined

  • Follow established business processes, protocols and quality standards in the development and deployment of complex solutions

  • Contribute to the development of tools, processes, and solutions to meet desired product needs

  • Perform analysis on existing systems; identifying options for potential solutions and assess for both technical and business suitability

  • Collaboration in hybrid global teams. Work across globally disparate development teams, technology, and business, product, and customers to ensure requirements are being met

  • Other duties as required



Skills and Experience

  • Experience of gathering business requirements and translating them into user stories and acceptance criteria

  • Broad understanding of software development methodologies, platforms, and tools

  • Facilitation skills. Ability to facilitate, small/medium sized workshops

  • Strong communication skills that facilitate effective dialog across all levels of the organization. Written communication skills including process documentation

  • Research, software analysis, and design skills

  • Previous experience of working in an agile environment and using recognized development methodology e.g., Agile, SCRUM, and KANBAN.

  • Experience of the BA role in the full software development lifecycle

  • Tools – Desirable tooling experience including JIRA, Confluence, Visio, BPMN, Slack, MS Office, Teams

  • Desirable - STM and data analytics experience
