This role in MSS Operations reports into the Business Design & Architecture Senior Lead and supports the delivery of MSS Operations Transformation and more particularly the 2025 Strategy Program (“Rubix”) of MSS Operations.
The teams work with Project Managers from S&C (Strategy and Change), technologists from MSS IT, members of MSS Ops ExCo. S&C and MSS Ops Transformation agenda is a combination of the MSS Ops 2025 Strategy, regulatory programs, new business initiatives from Markets and Securities Services: programmes include platform and product build, client on-boarding, operational efficiency and regulatory.
The MSS Ops Business Architecture teams manage operating model development/ business strategy and visions, process modelling and ensure adherence to design principles via a Design Authority, supporting our senior managers, Product Management, Sales & Business Development and Portfolio and Programme Managers, in building a change portfolio that supports an effective transition to the target business environment. They also support our business in maintaining up to date documentation of our critical processes and service offering.This role will mainly focus on business design and operating model development.
The scope of this effort is the full spectrum of MSS Operations-wide and thus may encompass business areas within Funds Services, Custody and Clearing and Settlement for FX/MM, Securities and Derivatives plus associated functions such as Data and other Utilities. The scope of the team is global.
What you’ll do:
Responsibilities
Operating Model/ Business Design
- To develop relationships with the key stakeholders and senior management both within MSS (IT, SSV Products, Markets Asset Classes, Operations, major delivery projects) and with other parts of HSBC like Digital Business Services.
- To develop an in-depth understanding of MSS’ business and products to be able to comprehend touch points, their impact and what MSS Ops and MSS are aiming to achieve through their strategic change programs.
- To develop an understanding of the business strategies, drivers and objectives of MSS business units.
- To use this knowledge to be able to make recommendations on preferred Operating Model states.
- Identify book of work to deliver devised end-states and work with change leads to prioritise.
- Work with change leads and the business to design the future state, including organisation structures, location strategy, roles and responsibilities, MI, governance, technology (working with tech architects) and data (working with data architects).
- Help shape and drive the strategic business design of MSS Operations across all services.
- To support the ongoing running of Operations Design Authority and delegated workstreams thereof.
Architecture
- To supervise the development of end-to-end process models, when required.
- To work closely with multiple stakeholders in defining preferred solutions for future architectures, and to facilitate agreement on the preferred way forward.
- To develop a broad understanding of processes and business architecture across MSS businesses.
- To monitor changes to existing operating models and advise potential impacts and risks of such changes
Reporting and Stakeholder management
- To organise and lead stakeholder governance sessions and communication
- To plan and lead workshops with multiple stakeholders
- To prepare regular stakeholder updates for senior management.
- To be able to communicate the contents of models and key concerns at different levels of the organisation, ranging from operations staff to senior executives.
- To prepare adhoc presentations as required to focus on particular issues, risks or options.
Management
- To contribute to keeping team set up and staffed with employees of the right profiles and within budgets (mixing AOP and alternative funding sources)
Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements)

Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)
- The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.
- The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply.
Requirements
What you will need to succeed in the role:
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications (For the role – not the role holder.Minimum requirements of the role.)
- In-depth knowledge of business design and creating target operating models.
- In depth knowledge of business architecture principles and industry standard frameworks.
- Experience within Financial services especially within a TPA / Investment background.
- Experience in delivering change within an investment management environment, including experience in both large-scale programmes and projects as well as smaller-scale change requests. Must include practical understanding of software development lifecycles and methods, including requirements definition and testing in both waterfall and Agile environments.
- Bachelor’s Degree in business or IT subjects or good secondary education coupled with relevant extensive experience.
- General awareness of business, regulatory and technology change within investment management is essential.

Knowledge & Experience
- Extensive experience in the Investment Management industry environment, spanning processes in front, middle and back office areas.
- Experience within a service provider supporting the delivery of Products (such as Middle Office, Accounting, Prime Broker or Custody services) to investment management clients.
- Demonstrates a solid grasp of the technology and systems supporting the above products.
- Exceptional analytical skills including modelling of business processes, dataflows and application system topologies
- Experience with several modelling methods and tools, ideally with solid experience in using Visio to produce flow diagrams.
Aptitudes
- Ability to absorb new information rapidly, and to quickly formulate responses and new ideas is crucial.
- Flexible approach to working around obstacles or finding alternative ways to gather information and deliver solutions.
- Able to work in a forceful yet tactful manner with other team managers to gain access to information and to gain commitment of their resources for workshops and reviews
- Excellent verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to move discussion rapidly to core issues and not to be deterred by potential conflicts in tackling controversial issues.
- Excellent relationship management and networking skills across business divisions, locations and organisation levels from operations staff through to senior executives.
- Possess the strength, knowledge and gravitas to challenge assumptions and the status quo whilst maintaining relationships.
- Enthusiastic and confident with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to provide clear and concise management information to stake-holders and sponsors.
- Self motivated and self-organised with solid time management and personal organisational skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work on multiple project workstreams.
- Ability to cope with ambiguity and lack of information, and to remain focussed on delivery of key objectives despite such uncertainties.
