The Opportunity:
The responsibility for Fraud Risk Management is within the functional remit of the First Line of Defense and has been established as an enduring Global Wholesale Fraud Risk Management function. The purpose is to support the frontline in identifying potential lending fraud (e.g. financial statement misrepresentation, loan abuse) earlier in the credit lifecycle and to make informed risk decisions.
We are currently seeking an experienced individual for the role of Lending Fraud Specialist (GCB5).
The role holder will work closely with regional and global fraud teams and will provide an analysis of fraud risk for Global Banking (GB) and Commercial Banking (CMB) customers.
What you’ll do:
Principal Accountabilities:
Key activities and decision making areas and Typical Targets and Measures Impact on the Business / Function
- Perform high quality lending fraud risk analysis for selected New to Bank (NTB) and existing CMB and GB customers in line with the global procedures.
- Evaluate fraud triggers and provide commentary/analysis for the frontline to use when evaluating lending fraud risk.
- Providing feedback into the calibration of trigger events typologies & prioritisation.
- Apply learned techniques, knowledge and expertise to new situations and in different business environments
- Undertake quality assurance of closed triggers, applying critical thinking and judgement when escalating concerns as appropriate.
- Provide detailed assessment of fraud triggers in line with the Wholesale Fraud target operating model.
- Provide SME guidance to the Regional Lending Fraud Specialist Lead to effectively manage fraud risk.
- Escalate trends of systemic lending fraud risk to appropriate stakeholders
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of lending fraud and upskill through continuous learning
Customers / Stakeholders
- Collaborate with the Regional Lending Fraud Specialist Lead to provide lending fraud subject matter expertise to the frontline.
- Provide feedback to the Regional Lending Fraud Specialist Lead and recommend improvements to processes, procedures and methodologies.
- Promote effective control management of fraud risks.
- Contribute towards meeting Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) so that the business effectively controls and mitigates risk (e.g. improved early risk identification)
- Provide SME guidance and support the frontline to effectively manage fraud risk
Leadership & Teamwork
- Provide high quality analysis which enable CMB and GB to effectively manage lending fraud risk.
- Collaborate with and support (where required) other Lending Fraud Specialists or Leads in their assessments.
- Support achievement of the HSBC vision, values, goals and culture in personal behaviour, actions and decision making.
- Complete Lending Fraud activities within/to the required timescales and quality.
- Establish strong working relationships and share best practice.
Operational Effectiveness & Control
- Drive a more proactive risk management framework through enhanced assessment, reporting and analytics.
- Facilitate the earlier identification of fraud risk in the credit lifecycle

- Be dynamic and positive to embrace increasing change in internal and external fraud environment.
- To proactively safeguard and ensure the highest standard of compliance and Fraud risk management across Global Banking and Commercial Banking, whilst being sufficiently adaptable to take consideration of business needs
- To provide support and subject matter expertise to colleagues in the management of fraud risk.
- To possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with various internal partners, across multiple departments to reach common goals.
Role Context
- The role of this team is considered critical in the context of increased internal and external (e.g. FCA/HKMA) attention to identify, measure, evaluate, control and manage fraud risk effectively. This role is a key component in adopting and enforcing the highest FCR and Credit standards in HSBC.
- The job holder will operate under guidance from Global and Regional Fraud stakeholders to uphold and enhance the quality with which fraud risk is identified and mitigated by the first line of defence.

Management & Leadership of Regulatory, Compliance & Operational Risk (OpRisk / FIM requirements)
Maintain and demonstrate awareness of fraud risk, regulatory and compliance matters. Minimise the likelihood of lending fraud risk occurring through identification, analysis, reporting, mitigation and control in accordance with the Group Operations FIM.
Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements)
Maintain and observe HSBC internal control standards, implement and observe global operating model requirements.

What you will need to succeed in the role:
- Proven, progressive and broad-based banking experience in commercial banking lending, relationship management and/or lending fraud management or equivalent
- Strong credit experience required with strong analytical skills with a keen eye for detail
- In depth knowledge of Lending Fraud typologies and industry fraud risk trends would be an advantage.
- Ability to work independently and apply judgement/critical thinking to identify risks and trends.
- Strong understanding of the HSBC global organization.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way.
- A legal or formal accountancy qualification or professional/working background in relevant risk disciplines.
- Proactive and willing to challenge the status quo.
- Written and spoken fluency in English is a requirement. In addition, written and spoken fluency in French, Spanish, Arabic or Cantonese would be an advantage.
