Senior Engineer Electrical– Substation Design

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer with deep expertise in either power system studies and EMT simulations or substation design for Transmission & Distribution (T&D) and Renewable Energy projects. The ideal candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions, supporting project development, and mentoring junior engineers and Design Drafters.

Responsibilities for Internal Candidates

Key Responsibilities:

Substation Design and System Studies / EMT Studies:

Perform EMT simulations using tools like PSCAD, EMTP-RV, or RTDS for complex grid integration scenarios.

Analyse grid code compliance for renewable energy integration (wind, solar, BESS).

Develop models for inverters, FACTS devices, HVDC systems, and protection schemes.

Collaborate with utilities, developers, and OEMs to interpret study results and recommend mitigation strategies.

Lead the design of high-voltage substations (up to 765 kV) including layout, equipment selection, and protection/control systems.

Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs.

Ensure compliance with CSA, IEC, IEEE, and utility-specific standards.

Coordinate with civil, structural, and SCADA teams for integrated substation design.

Support construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities as needed.

Qualifications for Internal Candidates

Required Qualifications:

Bachelors or masters degree in electrical engineering.

9+ years of relevant experience in T&D or renewable energy sectors.

Proficiency in tools such as ETAP, WinIGS, Dig SILENT, Easy Power, PSCAD, EMTP-RV, or AutoCAD/E3D for substation design.

Strong understanding of grid codes (e.g., CEC, CSA, NERC, IEC standards).

Excellent communication skills, strong leadership abilities, and the capability to independently coordinate and deliver high-quality technical reports.
