System Engineer – AS400 is responsible for the day-to-day administration, availability and performance of THE CLIENT's IBM i (AS400) platform, which hosts business-critical JD Edwards and Lawson workloads. The role covers operating system and DB2 administration, LPAR management, and the supporting Brocade SAN fabric.
This position is being established in India as a designated back-up to the single AS400 resource THE CLIENT retains in the United States, providing continuity of coverage for the platform through its remaining lifecycle.
- Management of the AS400 operating system and DB2 database environment.
- Support and administration of three production instances of JD Edwards running on AS400.
- Support and administration of multiple JD Edwards development environments.
- Management of LPARs (logical partitions) across the IBM Power estate.
- Management of the Brocade switches and SAN fabric supporting the AS400 stack.
- Support and administration of the Lawson application, which is also hosted on AS400.
- Act as back-up to the US-based AS400 resource, ensuring continuity of platform coverage.
The successful candidate will operate within the following THE CLIENT infrastructure landscape:
- Compute & virtualisation: VMware vCenter, Nutanix, hyperconverged compute (Dell VxRail), Dell PowerEdge, IBM Power / IBM i (LPARs). Total server estate of approximately 371 servers.
- Storage & backup: IBM storage array, Amazon S3 / Wasabi, Veeam, IBM SAN fabric (Brocade on the AS400 stack), and KeepIt for Microsoft 365 backup.
- Database: Microsoft SQL Server and AS400 DB2, including one production MS SQL Always On cluster across three nodes, generating approximately 10 incidents per month.
- Cloud: AWS (Redshift) and Azure (Azure SQL Server).
- Service management: ServiceNow Zurich release, with limited CMDB and CI maturity at present.
- Documentation: Knowledge management and standard operating procedures are currently very limited on the infrastructure side.
Engagement Context & Platform Roadmap
Candidates should be aware that the AS400 platform is on a defined decommissioning path:
- THE CLIENT retains one AS400 resource in the US and has requested a back-up resource be hired in India — this role.
- By end of 2027, two of the three JD Edwards instances will be migrated to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and managed by Oracle.
- The remaining instance is the Protein instance, located in Alabama.
- Lawson will be migrated to Microsoft Dynamics.
Given the limited existing knowledge management and SOP coverage on the infrastructure side, a meaningful part of this role will involve documenting the environment to support a clean transition and eventual decommissioning.
- Good years of hands-on experience administering IBM i / AS400 environments in a production setting.
- Strong working knowledge of IBM i operating system administration and DB2 for i, including performance tuning, journaling and backup/recovery.
- Demonstrated experience with LPAR creation, configuration and management on IBM Power hardware (Power 9 or comparable).
- Practical experience administering SAN fabric and Brocade switches, including zoning.
- Experience supporting ERP workloads on IBM — JD Edwards strongly preferred, Lawson advantageous.
- Working knowledge of CL programming and IBM job scheduling and subsystem management.
- Experience operating within an ITIL-aligned service management model, ideally using ServiceNow.
- Ability to work effectively across time zones with a US-based counterpart, including participation in an on-call rotation.
- Exposure to ERP migration or platform decommissioning programmes, particularly JD Edwards to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
- Familiarity with adjacent infrastructure technologies in the estate: VMware, Nutanix, Dell VxRail, Veeam, Microsoft SQL Server.
- Strong technical documentation skills, with a track record of building SOPs and knowledge articles in a low-maturity documentation environment.
- Scripting capability (CL, Python or PowerShell) for automation of routine operational tasks.
- ITIL Foundation certification (desirable).

About Company
Genpact was founded in 1997 as a unit of General Electric. The company was founded as GE Capital International Services (GECIS) in New Delhi. Starting with 20 employees under the leadership of CEO Pramod Bhasin, its charter was to provide business process outsourcing solutions to GE's businesses. In the beginning, GECIS created processes for outsourcing back-office activities for GE Capital such as processing car loans and credit card transactions. It was an experimental concept at the time and the beginning of the Business-Process-Outsourcing (BPO) industry.
One year after its launch, GECIS employed about 800 people and generated revenues of US$4 million. By 2001, GECIS operations had grown to 12,000 employees and the company began to manage a wide range of processes across GE's financial services and manufacturing businesses. Jack Welsh, CEO of GE at the time, said that GECIS was a key driver of GE’s growth between 1998 and 2001, and was responsible for reducing operating costs by approximately US$1 billion.
In 2003, GE reduced its stake in GECIS to 40% and sold the remainder to two American private equity firms. At the time of the sale, GECIS employed around 13,000 people in India and 4,000 people in the US, China, Hungary and Mexico, providing a range of solutions in areas such as finance and accounting, insurance claim processing, IT management and technical support.
By 2004, GECIS oversaw around 700 business processes for GE that had migrated from the US to India, generating revenues of US$426 million.
