The Position

Job Title: Regional Medical Expert (RME), Ophthalmology

Reporting & Function
  • Function: Medical
  • Reporting Line: Reports to the RME Lead
  • Location: Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai
  • (Dedicated in-field, 60-70% travel time)

Purpose Statement

The Regional Medical Expert is a trusted, externally focussed, scientifically grounded partner within our customer engagement model. By building and maintaining deep and trusted connections with key customers over a meaningful period of time, you will generate impact by anticipating and proactively optimizing medical practice, ensuring that Roche is a preferred partner in Ophthalmology. Your role is designed to maximize medical and scientific activities to accelerate the delivery of our pipeline, differentiate our portfolio based on data, and drive strategic advocacy, community engagement, and access to our ophthalmology portfolio.

Core Accountabilities

A. Contributing with Medical Expertise

  • Medical Expertise: Proactively contribute strong scientific, medical, and therapeutic area expertise within Ophthalmology to inform the differentiation of our pipeline and portfolio.
  • Shape Strategy: Lead the medical part of the integrated strategy, shape a scientifically sound and differentiated value story locally, and reflect an end-to-end business perspective that pulls through the strategy with impact.

B. Proactive Customer Engagement & Insights

  • Proactive Targeted Medical Engagement: Execute an HCP and account engagement plan aligned with cluster and pan-India medical strategy. Spend the majority of your time proactively engaging with external customers, KOLs, and other key stakeholders as partners in full strategic and operational alignment with other in-field roles.
  • Medical Partnership & Education: Build peer-to-peer scientific relationships with HCPs, KOLs, and relevant ophthalmology specialists. Provide current, high-quality Medical Education and support advisory boards, scientific meetings, and institutional forums. Conduct high-quality, non-promotional Scientific Exchanges to foster physician confidence.
  • Insight Generation: Systematically identify, capture, analyze, and translate external scientific and clinical practice insights from the field. Share these strategic, actionable recommendations directly with internal stakeholders, including DAMLs, MEs, and MCL.

C. License to Operate & Operational Excellence

  • Adherence to Standards: Ensure all activities, including customer engagements and research projects, are conducted in strict compliance with Roche SOPs, UCPMP, local regulations, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Good Pharmacovigilance Practice (GVP).

D. Evidence Generation

  • Evidence Strategy Implementation: Collaborate with DAMLs and MEs to proactively identify local differentiating evidence gaps and facilitate real-world evidence (RWE) opportunities, including registries, observational studies, and externally submitted Investigator-Initiated Studies (IIS).
  • Clinical Development Support: Support the identification and assessment of potential trial sites and active investigators. Collaborate closely with Clinical Operations to provide proactive input on feasibility and strategic site selection to aid in clinical study execution.
Competencies, Experience & Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Advanced degree (MBBS, MD, PharmD, PhD, or MPharm) with a strong scientific foundation.
  • Experience: 2–4 years’ experience in Medical Affairs, clinical practice, or a related field. Prior field-based/MSL experience is preferred. Prior exposure to Ophthalmology, specifically Vitreo-Retinal, is highly advantageous.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of clinical research, RWE, and the Indian healthcare environment. High willingness to travel (60-70% field time).
  • Language: Fluency in English is essential.

Core Competencies & Ethical Mindset:

  • Customer Focus: Prioritizes the needs of patients and customers (HCPs/TAEs), ensuring all actions drive value and satisfaction.
  • Strategic Acumen: Ability to think strategically, act with autonomy, and thrive in complex, cross-functional team environments.
  • Digital Literacy: Possesses a basic level of AI literacy and a learner mindset that proactively integrates digital tools. Ensures human-in-the-loop oversight of AI-derived content.
  • Collaborative Networker: Collaborates effectively as part of a multi-skilled team (squad) and proactively shares expertise across the organization to remove silos.
  • Growth Mindset & Curiosity: Demonstrates enthusiasm for continuous learning, learning agility to build deep disease knowledge quickly, and a strong solution-finding mindset.
  • Assertive Communication: Excellent ability to articulate complex medical context, conduct credible scientific discussions with HCPs, and build trust on a peer-to-peer level.
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Takes calculated risks, challenges the status quo, and proposes pragmatic, value-adding solutions without compromising Roche’s license to operate. High discipline in execution and insight documentation.
  • Value Creation: Focuses efforts on the added value, sustainability, and impact brought to patients and society within the ecosystem.
