A commerce degree can help you enter accounting. A globally recognised qualification can help you move into international accounting, US taxation, auditing, financial reporting and multinational finance roles.

This is where the US CPA certification attracts attention. It is especially relevant in India because global accounting firms, consulting companies, shared-service centres and multinational corporations regularly need professionals who understand US GAAP, auditing standards, internal controls and US taxation.

However, CPA eligibility is not as simple as completing one degree and registering for an exam. The qualification is regulated by individual US state boards, and every jurisdiction can set different education, examination and experience requirements.

Before investing money in coaching or examination fees, candidates must understand which state board they qualify under, whether their Indian education provides sufficient credits and whether they want to pass the CPA Exam or obtain the full CPA licence.

What is CPA Certification?

CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. It is a professional accounting licence issued by US state boards of accountancy rather than by one central national licensing authority.

The CPA examination is developed and administered through organisations including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and Prometric.

A CPA professional may work in areas such as:

  • Accounting and financial reporting
  • Audit and assurance
  • US taxation
  • Internal controls
  • Risk and compliance
  • Financial planning and analysis
  • Transaction advisory
  • Forensic accounting
  • Corporate finance
  • Management reporting

Passing all four examination sections is an important part of the journey. However, passing the exam alone does not automatically make a person a licensed CPA.

CPA Exam Passer vs Licensed CPA

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of the CPA journey.

A candidate becomes a CPA Exam passer after clearing all four sections. To use the CPA title as a licensed professional, the person must also satisfy the education, experience, ethics and licensing requirements of the selected state board.

CPA Exam passer

Licensed CPA

Has passed all four exam sections

Has passed all four sections

May still have pending education requirements

Has completed the required education

May not have completed work experience

Has completed approved work experience

Cannot automatically claim an active CPA licence

Receives a licence from a state board

Can mention exam completion accurately

Can use the CPA designation subject to state rules

Employers in India may hire candidates who have cleared some or all exam sections. However, candidates should never present themselves as licensed CPAs unless the relevant US state board has formally issued the licence.

Why Is the US CPA Popular in India?

India has become an important delivery centre for global accounting, consulting, audit support, taxation and financial reporting operations.

Many international companies maintain finance teams in India that support US entities. These roles require professionals who understand US accounting standards, audit procedures, regulatory filings and internal controls.

CPA-qualified professionals can find opportunities in:

  • Big Four accounting firms
  • Global consulting companies
  • US accounting outsourcing firms
  • Multinational corporations
  • Global capability centres
  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Technology companies
  • Investment and asset-management firms
  • Business-process management companies
  • Financial reporting and compliance teams

The qualification is particularly useful for candidates who want to work with US clients or build a career in global accounting without necessarily relocating to the United States.

CPA Eligibility in India

There is no single universal eligibility rule for every CPA candidate. Requirements differ across US jurisdictions.

According to NASBA, candidates must first select the jurisdiction through which they plan to apply and then confirm its specific education and examination requirements. Some jurisdictions require 150 semester hours, while others allow candidates to sit for the examination with fewer credits.

General educational requirement

The traditional CPA licensing pathway commonly requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • A specified number of accounting credits
  • A specified number of business-related credits
  • A total of 150 US semester hours
  • Completion of the CPA Exam
  • Relevant professional experience

NASBA has also outlined newer model pathways that may include a 120-hour bachelor’s route combined with two years of experience, as well as a graduate accounting degree route. Adoption is not automatic across every jurisdiction, so candidates must check the rules of their chosen state board.

How Indian degrees are generally evaluated

An Indian degree does not directly translate into US semester credits without a formal evaluation.

The outcome depends on:

  • Duration of the degree
  • University recognition
  • Subjects studied
  • Accounting credits
  • Business-related credits
  • Postgraduate qualifications
  • Professional courses completed
  • Rules of the selected jurisdiction

A three-year BCom by itself may not provide enough credits under some state boards. A BCom combined with an MCom, MBA Finance, CA qualification or other recognised postgraduate study may help candidates meet additional credit requirements.

This should not be treated as a guaranteed formula. Two candidates with similar degrees can receive different evaluations because their universities, subjects and transcripts may differ.

Eligibility by educational background

Educational background

Likely position

BCom or BBA with accounting subjects

May qualify for certain exam jurisdictions but could have a credit shortfall

BCom plus MCom

More likely to satisfy higher education-credit requirements

BCom plus MBA Finance

May provide additional business credits, subject to evaluation

Qualified CA

May receive substantial academic recognition, depending on the jurisdiction

CA Inter with graduation

Eligibility depends on degree credits and state-board rules

Four-year commerce or accounting degree

May offer stronger credit coverage

Non-commerce graduate

May need additional accounting and business coursework

Education Evaluation for Indian Candidates

International candidates generally need their academic credentials evaluated to determine their US equivalency.

Candidates may be asked to submit:

  • Degree certificates
  • Semester-wise mark sheets
  • Official transcripts
  • University-issued documents
  • Professional qualification records
  • Certified English translations, where applicable

The evaluation report determines whether the candidate satisfies the degree, total-credit, accounting-credit and business-credit requirements of the selected jurisdiction.

Do not select a state board solely because someone online described it as easy. Select one based on your education, intended licensing path, mobility requirements and future career plans.

CPA Exam Structure in 2026

The CPA Exam follows the Core-plus-Discipline model. Every candidate must pass three Core sections and choose one Discipline section.

Three compulsory Core sections

1. Auditing and Attestation

AUD tests audit procedures, evidence, professional responsibilities, ethics, risk assessment and the ability to form audit conclusions.

2. Financial Accounting and Reporting

FAR covers financial accounting, financial-statement preparation, reporting frameworks, transactions and accounting for different entities.

3. Taxation and Regulation

REG covers federal taxation, business law, ethics, professional responsibilities and taxation of individuals and business entities.

One Discipline section

Candidates choose one of the following:

Business Analysis and Reporting: BAR covers advanced financial reporting, financial analysis, data interpretation and technical accounting topics.

Information Systems and Controls: ISC focuses on information systems, cybersecurity, IT controls, data governance, system security and SOC engagements.

Tax Compliance and Planning: TCP includes advanced individual and business taxation, tax compliance and tax-planning concepts.

BAR, ISC or TCP

The choice of Discipline does not create a different type of CPA licence. It allows candidates to demonstrate deeper knowledge in a particular area. The AICPA confirms that the current exam consists of three Core sections and one selected Discipline.

Which CPA Discipline Should You Choose?

Your Discipline should match your knowledge, work experience and career goal.

Discipline

Best suited for

BAR

Financial reporting, controllership, FP&A and technical accounting

ISC

IT audit, cybersecurity, systems, SOC reporting and internal controls

TCP

US taxation, tax compliance and tax advisory

BAR may appeal to candidates with strong financial accounting and analysis skills. ISC can suit professionals working in technology risk, information systems or IT audit. TCP is useful for candidates targeting US tax careers.

Do not choose only by comparing pass rates. The section that aligns with your strongest subject area is usually the more practical choice.

CPA Course Duration

A well-prepared candidate may complete all four sections in approximately 12 to 18 months. Some complete the process faster, while working professionals may require 18 to 24 months.

The time depends on:

  • Existing accounting knowledge
  • Weekly study hours
  • Number of attempts
  • Discipline selected
  • Employment schedule
  • Credit deficiencies
  • Evaluation and application timelines
  • Examination availability

Completing all four sections should not be rushed at the cost of conceptual understanding. CPA jobs require candidates to apply accounting rules in real situations.

How Much Does CPA Certification Cost in India?

The total cost varies by state board, evaluation provider, number of attempts, international testing fees, currency conversion and coaching provider.

Major cost components include:

  • Academic evaluation fee
  • State-board or eligibility application fee
  • Examination fee for four sections
  • International administration fee
  • Study materials or coaching
  • Rescheduling charges, where applicable
  • Ethics examination fee, if required
  • Licence application fee
  • Continuing education after licensing

Indian candidates may spend approximately 3.5 lakh to 6 lakh or more on the complete journey when examination, international testing and training expenses are included.

This is an indicative planning range, not an official fixed price. Always calculate the latest fees from NASBA, the selected state board, Prometric and the chosen training provider before enrolling.

FAQs

A BCom graduate may qualify under certain US jurisdictions, but eligibility is not automatic. The degree must be evaluated for total semester hours and required accounting and business credits. Candidates with a three-year BCom may face a credit shortfall and could need postgraduate education or additional recognised coursework.

The CPA Exam has four sections. Every candidate must pass the three Core sections: AUD, FAR and REG. The candidate then chooses one Discipline from BAR, ISC or TCP. Each section requires a reported score of at least 75, although this is a scaled score rather than a straightforward percentage.

An entry-level professional with CPA progress or completion may earn approximately ₹5 lakh to ₹14 lakh annually in India. Actual salary depends on exam status, licensing, prior experience, employer and job profile. Candidates with Big Four exposure, US taxation knowledge or financial-reporting experience may receive stronger offers than candidates without practical experience.

Yes. US CPAs can work in India in global accounting, US taxation, audit support, financial reporting, internal controls, consulting and multinational finance roles. However, a US CPA licence does not provide Indian statutory audit-signing authority. That work is regulated separately and generally requires appropriate ICAI membership and practice eligibility.

CPA is demanding because it tests both technical knowledge and practical application through multiple-choice questions and task-based simulations. FAR is often challenging because of its broad accounting coverage, while other sections may be difficult depending on the candidate’s background. Consistent study, question practice and conceptual understanding make the exam manageable.
