Consultant Transfusion Medicine

Role & responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

• Evaluate and manage patients requiring blood transfusion support.
• Provide clinical guidance on component therapy, transfusion reactions, and special transfusion needs.
• Approve requests for rare blood components or special preparations (irradiated, leukoreduced, washed RBCs, etc.).
• Participate in transfusion audits and clinical outcome reviews.
• Manage and investigate transfusion reactions and document findings.

2. Blood Bank Operations

• Oversee donor selection, counseling, and phlebotomy activities.
• Supervise component preparation (RBCs, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate).
• Ensure proper blood grouping, crossmatching, and compatibility testing.
• Monitor inventory of blood/components; prevent shortages or wastage.
• 
  Authorize release of blood and blood components as per policies.

3. Quality & Compliance

• Ensure adherence to NABH/NABL and Drug & Cosmetics Act (Blood Bank Rules).
• Implement and monitor internal and external quality control programs.
• Review SOPs and ensure staff compliance with standard protocols.
• Ensure documentation accuracy and maintain regulatory records.
• Coordinate with authorities during inspections and audits.

4. Training & Team Management

• Train technical staff, nurses, and clinicians on transfusion practices.
• Conduct CMEs, internal training sessions, and competency evaluations.
• Supervise Blood Bank Technicians and Medical Officers.

5. Donor Management

• Oversee voluntary donor recruitment programs and camps.

• Ensure donor safety, post-donation care, and record maintenance.
• Review donor-related incidents and implement preventive actions.

6. Equipment & Safety

• Ensure proper functioning, calibration, and maintenance of blood bank equipment.
• Implement infection control measures and biosafety protocols.
• Oversee cold chain management and temperature monitoring systems.

Qualifications & Experience

• MD / DNB in Transfusion Medicine
  OR MD Pathology / Microbiology / Immunohematology with relevant experience in transfusion services.
• Valid registration with Medical Council.
• Experience in blood bank operations preferred (as per regulatory norms).
